Simple. Make one of the people a tortured or guilt-ridden individual who’s been scarred by something, whether it be abuse, something bad they did in their past, etc… Then make the other person a compassionate, caring individual with little to no emotional baggage who is quick to offer a tissue, a big hug, or some other form of comfort. Works like a charm.
